On Thursday, March 21, 2013, NAIOP Colorado joined with the Apartment Association of Colorado and ICSC for the 2013 Commercial Real Estate and Multi-Family Housing Day at the Capitol. The group met in the Old Supreme Court Chambers of the State Capitol Building at 1:00 pm.
The program started right away with a presentation by Attorney General John Suthers. He brought the group up to speed on a number of issues facing the State of Colorado from a legal perspective including a lively discussion on the reaction of the legal profession to the gun rights Bill's that have been passed and signed during this session. He also talked at length about the Lobato Case which could have significant impact on the state budget depending on the ruling of the court.
Representative Domenic Moreno (D); Representative Kevin Priola (R) - Minority Caucus Whip; Representative Libby Szabo (R) - Assistant Minority Leader; Representative Jerry Sonnenberg (R); Senator Kevin Grantham (R); Representative Claire levy (D) - House Speaker Pro Tem; Representative Kathleen Conti (R); Representative Bob Gardner (R) - NAIOP Colorado's Legislator of the Year; and Senator Bill Cadman (R) - Senate Minority Leader all spoke to the group about legislation they are working on this year and answered questions about Bill's of interest of the commercial real estate industry.
Loren Furman, Colorado Association of Commerce and Industry (CACI) VP of Governmental Affairs talked to the group about various business Bill's that are working their way through the legislature. NAIOP Colorado is a member of CACI in order to weigh in on these kinds of Bill's that we would otherwise not have the time or ability to influence.
Henry Sobanet, Director of the Office Planning and Budget for the state, gave the group an update on the status of the state budget and what the current plans are for the nearly $1 Billion surplus. He gave the group a sneak peak at the budget discussions which will occupy the legislature during the upcoming couple of weeks.
In addition to state and local issues, Toby Burke, Senior Director of State and Local Affairs with NAIOP Corporate and Leslie McDowell Fox, Director of Legislative outreach with ICSC in DC were available to update attendees on the important issues at the federal level. Leslie kept us up to date on the US Senate and their review of the Marketplace Fairness Act of 2013. While they didn't actually vote on the Act yet, they did vote 75 to 24 in favor of seeing sales tax collected on internet transactions.
This was followed by a reception at the University Club which was well attended by members and legislators as well. All in all a great day of networking and communication. Many NAIOP, AAP, and ICSC members were able to discuss a wide variety of issues with a large number of elected officials. A great Day at the Capitol 2013!
